We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Cabo San Lucas. There was plenty of sun, a handful of margaritas, great friends, a touch of food poisoning (sorry Peanut!), fantastic accommodations (gracias Rodrigo!), and a good time was had by all. It has been a challenge to get back on the ride, and we have discovered that we can't put our groceries on room 2303. (now I remember the room number!)

Roasted Cauliflower and Garlic Soup

It has been so cold and foggy the past couple of days it feels more like San Francisco summer rather than winter. I know, I know. It's colder almost everywhere else in the world, and I have accepted the fact that I have become soft.

I thought a good way to warm up would be to chef up some soup. I stumbled upon this recipe in the San Francisco Chronicle during my Sucka-free Sunday ritual of reading the paper and thought I would take a stab at it. Not to mention, it gave me an excuse to use my shiny new 6 3/4 quart oval dutch oven that I have only been stalking for 3 years. J'taime Le Creuset! A handful of you asked me for the recipe, and since my new venture in observations of gastronomic proportions: Nielsen-Ratings, is not up and running quite yet (stay tuned on that one), I thought I would post the recipe here.

Bon Appétit!

2 heads cauliflower, cut into small florets (about 12 cups)
8 cloves garlic, peeled
5 Tbsp EVOO (Rachel Ray shout out there. Gag.)
Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
1 large shallot, minced
1 large leek, halved lengthwise, rinsed will ad sliced into half moons
1/2 pound baking potato, peeled and diced (about 1 cup; I actually ended up using 1 1/2 cups)
1 tsp minced fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
7 cups chicken broth plus more if needed
1/2 c. heavy cream

Note: the original recipe called for 1 c. heavy cream. I wasn't going to add any at all, because it came out so creamy, but decided to add 1/2 c. as it balanced the chicken broth and made it perfect.

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 400º. Divide the cauliflower and garlic between two sheet pans. Toss the contents of each pan with 1.5 T of olive oil, and a generous amount of salt and pepper to taste. Roast for 20-25 minutes, until cauliflower is softened and brown in spots. Remove from oven and set aside.

Note: I was able to fit all of this on one pan. No need to fuss with 2 pans. The heads of cauliflower used for the original recipe must have been, well....as big as your head.

Also to note: When the cauliflower comes out of the oven it will be soooo delicious, you will want to eat it all right then. It's amazing this soup was even able to come together.

Cauliflower seasoned and ready for the oven. It is challenging to make cauliflower look exciting with a pop of color. It's just not happening here.

Meanwhile, in a large stockpot, (see aforementioned 6 3/4 quart oval dutch oven. So worth the investment. You won't be disappointed. The hardest decision to make is picking a color. But I digress.....) warm the remaining 2 Tbsp oil over medium heat. Add the shallot and leek, and saute until slightly softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Stir in the potato, thyme, bay leaves and cauliflower mixture. Cover with the chicken broth, bring to a boil, then immediately turn heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes.

Using a blender, puree the soup until completely smooth. Add heavy cream, and if needed, add more broth to thin soup to desired consistency. (More broth was not necessary)

Note: I highly recommend getting a Cuisinart Smart Stick immersion blender. Best $30 bucks I have ever spent. You can blend it right in the pot, you don't have to worry about spilling hot liquid all over the place making a transfer, and it surprisingly gets the job done.

Season generously with salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately. The recipe said to top with garlic breadcrumbs, but I made a quick fontina cheese crostini, (which was a knockout with some butternut squash soup we made for Thanksgiving...thanks Giada!) and floated it on the top.

For the crostini:

1/2 baguette, sliced into 1/2 inch slices
Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
2 T chopped fresh thyme leaves (will make the thyme pop in your soup)
1 c. grated fontina cheese
Kosher salt

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400º. Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with thyme. Sprinkle cheese on top and season with salt, to taste. Bake until the cheese has melted and the bread is light golden, about 6 to 8 minutes.

Final product. Again, not happy with the picture, but you get the idea. Deelish!

As most of you know, I have the tendency to go overboard, and Thanksgiving is certainly no exception. We are headed North to Petaluma to indulge in a multitude of culinary wonders with our friends Brett and EP. It will be a collaborative effort that will include the following:

Appetizer:
Hog Island Oysters with champagne vinegar mignonette
Stuffed mushrooms with Italian sausage and marscapone

Starter:
Butternut Squash Soup with fontina cheese crostini
Rosemary sea salt rolls

Main:
Herb Roasted Turkey w/ Truffle Butter
Fried Turkey

I know. Two turkeys? Really? We are doing a side by side taste test, not to mention making an attempt to fill our freezers in one shot. I am not even going to tell you how big these suckers are.

Babs' famous cornbread stuffing (because it's that good)

Again...2 kinds of stuffing? Yes. They say variety is the spice of life.

Today, Tuesday, November 3 was the Frog's birthday, again. My how time flies. However, the birthday celebrations started already last week with a birthday dinner at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, with our friends Brett & EP, followed by a Sunday brunch at Waterbar with Brett, EP, Rob and Devon.

On the actual birthday we celebrated by eating even more starting with a late lunch at Le Garage in Sausalito and then in the evening with some drinks and more food at Piccolo Teatro.

Thank you to everyone who wrote, called and came out for the vast flora of eating and drinking activities.

France 2009

As usual we made our annual pilgrimage to Cannes in the south of France to spend some time with Kaj, Anneke and Tsabo but also to take in those lovely Mediterranean rays and the deep blue azure waters. And as usual, there were no disappointments, just wonderfully copious amounts of wine, cheese and other delicious foods, sailing, beach time, pool time, restaurants, warm waters, perfectly humid temps, fireworks, late evenings and even later mornings. If there was anything negative then the culprit was a lingering cold that I picked up on the way to Sweden. Most pictures are worth a thousand words, these are worth a million and summarize our trip quite nicely. Enjoy!!

Lost Balls Wins!

Lost Balls (sans Peter and EP)

While we have made it to the finals many times, we have always fallen short....until now! Lost Balls are officially the 2009 Sausalito Fall Bocce Ball Champions! There was a little bit of controversy, a little bit of sweat, and of course a lot of trash talk, (a special shout out to the Wombats who can dish it out as well as they can take it!) but I am happy to report that the Nielsen Trophy for Bocce Ball Champions is back home where it belongs!

Unfortunately Peter has been under the weather, and EP was taking a class, so they were not able to make it to the court to show off their mad skills (which contributed to the aforementioned sweating), but they got us this far, and we were able to pull it together to bring the trophy home! For now, we will be basking in our glory, but will be anxiously anticipating next season.

Magnus & Johanna's Wedding

The main reason for our trip to Sweden this summer, other than to see family and friends of course, was to bear witness the joining of brother Magnus to his girl Johanna. The actual ceremony took place at the church in Hovås, which is the neighborhood where we grew up, at least during the times when we did live in Sweden. In fact, that church has now not only seen the wedding of Magnus and Johanna, but also, my baptism as well as my brothers, along with their confirmation (for some reason I had my confirmation at some sort of 3-week golf camp in central Sweden).

The day ended up being perfect with a beautiful and short ceremony followed by a reception and dinner at a very quaint old reception hall, near the harbor inlet to the city of Gothenburg. As always there was plentiful amounts of drink, food and dancing. The pictures beneath tell the story.

I know, I know. We can't seem to keep up with our own life these days. There have been parties, wine tastings, new food discoveries, and a chili fest. Not to mention, I am still waiting for our contributing editor to post pics from the nuptials of Johanna and Magnus. That still seems like it was yesterday! And here it is October. I thought I would just jump in and post a few pics from the highlight of the week (besides our upcoming bocce ball win tonight! Come on Lost Balls!!)

This week I had the opportunity to meet David Lebovitz, the former Chez Panisse pastry chef turned cookbook author, not to mention hilarious blogger. (side note: how long has Chez Panisse been on my list now? I smell a birthday dinner!) David was in town for a food blogging conference that happened to be sold out, otherwise I would have been all over it, and he also made a few stops in San Francisco to talk about his latest book: The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City.

I stumbled upon David's blog a while ago, and follow him and his adventures in Paris quite religiously. I could not pass up the opportunity to get my book signed and my heart actually raced at the thought of exchanging a few words. I loved this book. I love his writing style, his sense of humor, and I am dying to try one of his recipes. It was also fun to read this book while sitting by the pool in France this summer as he commented on everything from French social conduct to the mysteries of men's footwear. I even asked him if he was ever able to find that blasted pair of 110 cm shoelaces. No such luck. Oddly enough, I had a hard time finding them myself in an attempt to give him a lovely parting gift, but that's another story.

It's no secret that I love food, and I have always had an admiration for chefs. But a chef turned author living in Paris?? He is my George Clooney of the food and writing world. Okay, maybe a little more like Neil Patrick Harris (who I also happen to adore) but I digress.....

As I was getting closer to the counter among a handful of other fans and hopefuls the question was.....do I get the picture? Do I ask him to humor me and pose for a picture? Do I ask a stranger in the crowd to push the button on the camera? Do I embarrass myself as the crazed fan and writer wannabe?

OF COURSE! I am so glad I took a trip over the bridge to get a glimpse of what is ultimately possible if you do what you love. Successful people always say the same thing: do what you love, and the rest will follow. David, you are officially invited to my Celebrity Thanksgiving Dinner.

Sweden Summer 2009

So, as I mentioned during my last entry, we are indeed a few months behind on our blog entries in relation to when it actually happened.

On July 25th I got on a plane in Montreal (after a week in Hali and an evening in Montreal) heading to Europe. On the same day, The Frog did the same, but departing from SFO. Destination: the motherland and mothertown of Gothenburg.

As always, I try to make this trip every year to see family and catch up, however this year's trip was more centered on my brother Magnus' wedding (see upcoming post). A couple of days after arriving I caught a really horrible cold, so not that much got done during the week, other than lots of coffee drinking and tv watching. We did manage to squeeze in some tasty dinners with mom and Leif as well as dad and Anneke, who also were in Sweden for the wedding, naturally.

Spaghetti alla Carbonara

I have been threatening to make an attempt at homemade pasta from scratch for a while now, and finally dug deep for some inspiration. It actually wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, although I do have a new appreciation for the perfectly prepared pasta seen in the store, not to mention my Kitchen Aid mixer! After some brief collaboration, P. was officially in charge of the Carbonara sauce. It was fantastic! How can you really go wrong with garlic, cream, and pancetta? Next up: ravioli.

The weather is getting warmer, the streets are becoming less crowded with tourists, and Tom Jones actually had enough potatoes at the chicken truck! Yep, bocce season is here! It was a great turnout for the season opener, and we were anxious to meet the new team Frarness Kraun. This team has caused quite a controversy in the league, and I won't bore you with the details, but the rumor is, that the captain of this team, his great great grandfather invented bocce ball, and he has been trying to get into the Sausalito league for 10 years. It has also been said that that this captain has never even washed his bright orange lucky bocce socks. (The story only got better with increased amounts of wine.)

In an attempt to look like we came to win, we decided to go with team uniforms. Not having our act together to come through with t-shirts, we opted for the next best thing, which of course, were sweatbands. I thought we looked like champions, and they must have made a difference since we won our first game! Here's to a great season!

So as many of you have discovered we are running a little behind with our blog entries. Our explanation is simple, we've simply been traveling and having way too much fun to post any new blogs. The best part is that the majority of all the traveling has been for pure pleasure, which is always a bonus. As such we have a couple of months of posts to catch up on.

As most of you may know we headed over to Europe in July. However, before that, I made a stop in my old stomping grounds of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sadly I discovered that next time I come for a visit I need more than a week to really do and see all the people I want to. Alas, some of you were not graced by my presence and for that I apologize.

However, in my short time there I was able to squeeze in some quality time with some of my oldest and best friends. It was all capped off with perhaps one of my favourite places in the world, Stefan's cottage, which is where all the pictures were taken. Good times, good times. Still hard to beat summers in Hali. I'll be back next year, for an extended visit. Thanks for the memories.

Dog Days of Summer

Okay, so we have been home from the Motherland for a few weeks, but we still haven't really quite caught our breath. There have been trips to Denver, LA, San Diego, an attempt in mastering the art of making a perfect margarita, drinking wine in Russian River, and even an attempt to channel our inner child by jumping rope in Petaluma. The end of the summer flew by in a blur, although, as far as summer weather goes, in our neck of the woods, it is really just the beginning......

The 4th of July came and went way too fast. We had a fantastic time and it was definitely one of the highlights of our summer. We couldn't let any more time pass without a mention of it here, and posting a few Kodak moments. The Keeleys came to town (my sister and her husband) and we started out with a trip to the city via ferryboat for a Giants game.

After a great time at the Giants game and one too many handfuls of garlic fries, the next day we headed out for our annual 4th o' July sail in San Francisco Bay. This has become somewhat of a tradition and we were thrilled that the Keeleys were in town for it this year! Also on deck were the Fenirattys, who came equipped with a barrel of laughs and gourmet sandwiches of course, and Joey and Erica were also able to join us. With our trusty captain and a cooler full of cold beer, we were off to set sail.

Although our day had come to an end on the water, things were just getting started back at Chez Nielsen. We had a little BBQ and a handful of people stopped by for some fun and fireworks. The evening ended in polyester, some Euro-trash beats, and a super-model walk-off. Definitely off the hook, and will be tough to top next year!

A beautiful Sucka-free Sunday in the Village of Pegomas. It seems the Sunday morning ritual is to pick up some fresh croissants for la petit dejeuner. We had to stop at 2 different boulangeries to get the last 3 in the village. As we didn't want to return to La Pitchoun short a croissant, we had to pick up an additional baguette which was hot out of the oven. It took everything I had to keep it intact on the ride home. Not to mention the croissant. I feel happy just thinking about it. The golden sheen, the flaky crust, the soft, buttery innards. Oh man.

Now we are off to the Farmer's Market in Cannes, followed by an afternoon lounging by the pool. I understand this is the recommended way to burn off aforementioned baked goods.

I am considering having the mail forwarded here, and my pants taken out. Viva la France!

My sister and her husband Chris came for a visit over the 4th of July weekend, which of course, I have yet to post any pics. She was sitting at the kitchen counter and we were talking about the fantastic cookbook she put together for us at Tastebook for Christmas a couple of years ago. I always wondered why one of the recipes was marked in the book, and she said it was specific to go with the accompanying gift. To which I replied, "what accompanying gift?" She was absolutely mortified and then realized she forgot to send us said gift, and would not let it go. I told her it was no big deal and that we loved the cookbook itself.

After some good times and sisterly shenanigans during their visit, she said she would send me copies of the pics that we took on a thumb drive. I waited, and waited (thus the delay in post) and checked the mail, but alas, no thumb drive. To my surprise, the other day I found a giant box sitting outside the gate from her. In it were a couple of fantastic serving plates (not pictured) which I loved! Perfect for pancetta goat cheese crisps topped with fig and honey. (recipe to follow) She even wrapped it in X-mas paper with a tag that said Merry X-Mas 2007! She is too much. This is only one example of why she has earned the title: Best. Sister. Ever. Miss you Peen!

Mill Valley Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting

Last weekend we went to the Mill Valley Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting. The weather was perfect, so what could be better than drinking a little wine in the sun? There were over 70 wineries, and several local restaurants cheffing up some quality snacks. Tyler Florence was also there and he was grilling up a fantastic strawberry sandwich with some Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam cheese (pictured above). Deelish!

As I was waiting in line for my aforementioned grilled strawberry cheese sandwich, there was a girl behind me that was disappointed she forgot her camera. I, having mine with me, turned around and offered to take a picture of her and her husband. To which she replied, "oh, I don't care about taking a picture with my husband, I want my picture with Tyler." So, of course I couldn't resist jumping in the picture with her. I e-mailed her a copy, and I am sure I am sitting on her mantel.

A visit from Markus and Charlie

Over the weekend our friends Markus and Charlie came up north from Encinitas for a visit to the City by the Bay. They haven't been up north for about 5 years, so it was long overdue! It was so great to see them, and I hope we can do it again soon!

First stop, Sushi Ran:

This was a magical roll that involved Copper River Salmon, spicy crab, some fancy, dried Japanese pepper and some other fantastic accoutrements that we were told would probably never be duplicated. We were sure to chew slowly and enjoyed every minute of it. (Of course in my attempt at being discreet, the poor quality photo, that clearly doesn't do it justice was taken with my camera phone.)

Walking back after dinner, Peter snapped a few less than desirable shots, but they make me laugh, as does he. (Nice focus Herb Ritts.)

After we cleared our heads from the shenanigans at the Cruising Club, the festivities continued through the weekend at the Sundancing River Lodge in Russian River. We had an absolute blast, with perfect weather, great food, and fantastic people.

We had the great pleasure of attending the Kelly and Rob 30/40 birthday extravaganza at the Sausalito Cruising Club. As you can see from the invitation, the dappest duds were required from the 60s and 70s, and we were not going to disappoint.

I found a vintage one-piece 100% polyester number in this ravishing baby blue color from Poochie's Closet. My vision was Farrah Fawcett, but somehow ended up looking like a cross between 70s Barbie and Carol Brady. And can we talk about Peter?? He brought the house down with these digs. Last weekend we were running around town on a beautiful 70 degree day in San Francisco, and we thought we would just do a quick "pop-in" around the Haight to put the final touches on our outfits for an upcoming soiree. Turns out it was the Haight Ashbury Street Fair. I could see Peter's white knuckles gripping the steering wheel as we were struggling to find a place to park, and the thought of spending his Sunday with all of the hippies in the entire Bay Area that would be in full force was not exactly his first choice, but we ended up finding a spot, and we were happy to be out in the city on such an amazingly beautiful day. We did also put the finishing touches on our digs for the party, and I am going to have to be sure the camera is fully charged! Stay tuned....

(also to note, I was caught without my camera on this excursion, so I attempted to capture the essence of the day via camera phone. The quality of the photos is not reflective of the quality of the day o' fun that was had.)

So I've been a little complacent with recording my trackdays over the past few months but this time I made the effort to remember the camera and took the time to mount it.

In this video I was following a Porsche 911 (996) Turbo with a tuned 500hp engine and did a pretty good job keeping up despite the fact that my Volvo weighs about 500 pounds more. Not bad if I may say so myself :)

The Dead - Shoreline Amphitheater May 2009

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to see The Dead for the first time in....a long time! (15 years? How can that even be??) At first I was a little apprehensive, as the show would be sans-Jerry, but Brett and EP convinced me that it would be a good time. Peter decided that this was not his scene, and we all agreed that he would not have survived the free love and hippie vibe. I cannot thank the Van Emsts enough for the stellar tickets, the adventure in Big Blue, and especially for the laughs. I was not disappointed, although Jerry was missed. I still remember my first Dead Show wandering around the parking lot of McNichols Arena in Denver with my buddy Ryan who said to me, "You see that man in the beard on stage Burger? As long as he is standing, we are standing." Here's to fierce jams, fire dancers, veggie burritos, and Jerry Garcia.

I wish! It has always been one of my goals to make it to a tennis Grand Slam tournament, and my first choice would certainly be the French Open. While we were not basking in the heat of summer in Paris on Court Philippe Chatrier, we did get to see quite a heated match between Sweden's Robin Soderling and the 4 time French Open champion Rafael Nadal. It was arguably one of the biggest upsets in Grand Slam tennis by the Swede, so really this is just a shout out to the Motherland. Holla!

Colin comes for a visit

A couple of weeks ago my good friend Colin finally managed to drag himself back out to the Bay Area for a visit and some much deserved down-time. Although the intention was to just have a chill week we still managed to pack in a whole bunch of things. On his first day here we headed north towards Healdsburg for a late lunch at the Bear Republic Brewing Company (try their award-winning "RACER 5" India Pale Ale) with a brief detour to Yountville to grab a tasty coffee at Bouchon Bakery. The weather gods were kind to us and treated us to sunny skies and 25 degreec C.

The following day we hit the city for some shopping followed by a hike in the Marin Headlands and finished the day off with dinner at Fish in Sausalito.

The final day was foggy, rainy and dreary so we hit the city once again for a little bar hopping starting with our first beer at around 11am at Club 540 in Inner Richmond. Then followed by more beer and a tasty lunch at Q Restaurant.

The picture above was pretty much the only one we managed to take all week.....it was taken 5 minutes before leaving for the airport. Good times, good times. Come back soon.

Kirby Cove

Last week I found myself scrambling for my camping gear that I haven't pulled out for awhile for a mid week adventure on the other side of the bridge to a little hidden gem called Kirby Cove.

I knew some time had passed since I have ventured into the wilderness when the guy at REI asked if I had just been released from prison due to my lack of familiarity with the latest advances in headlamps. We knew this would also be quite an undertaking for Peter, as there would not be any room service, but since we were not too far from home, we figured it would be a great way to break him in. But alas, he was saved by a trip to the airport to pick up our friend Colin who was coming into town from Halifax. Next time Nielsen, next time.

After some champagne and before the sunset, it was time to set up camp. I pulled the following shots out of the latest REI catalogue, so I could remember how it was done:

Erika's Birthday Extravaganza

My friend and partner in crime Erika came for a visit as her 33rd birthday was rapidly approaching, and she decided to celebrate with a bang by eating and drinking her way through this fantastic city of ours.

After circling the airport and stalking baggage claim to find her since her flight was delayed due to another spring snow storm in Denver, (when was the last time you picked up someone from the airport without a cell phone? Another story.) and then learning the many facets of Fancy Feast cat food (again, another story), we were off to the Mission for dinner at Maverick.

For starters the "Meat at Maverick".

It has been determined that I am officially not a big fan of sopressata. I don't care how pretty you try to make it on the plate.

Then, the short ribs and paparadelle with mushroom ragu in the background. Deelish!

And don't even get me started on the wine! (A Donkey and Goat, anyone??)

Wandering around the Mission on a Friday night, we decided to pop into the Elbo Room. I made a beeline to the back of the bar, as a photo op was awaiting us...

I know that first shot looks a little questionable, but that was my terrible attempt at channeling Sophia Loren.

The weather was amazing, so the next day we decided to round up a couple of cruiser bikes for a jaunt over to Tiburon. Erika had the wild idea to take out the tandem. NOT a good idea. After a few trials and tribulations, and laughing so hard we practically needed a change of pants, we opted for our own bikes. Phew!

We started out smiling, because we didn't really know what we were in for.

Once we made it to Tiburon, we had lunch on the patio at Guaymas. Hands down the best tamale I have ever had....ever!

The next day we had planned to go sea kayaking, but alas, we felt that we had plenty of exercise the day before, so we decided to go shopping! We tore it up on Union Street and then rounded out the day with a late lunch in the sun at the Crab Shack.

So, I am on The Ladders mailing list, as I am keeping my options open in the never ending quest to reach my full potential. Dog Days of Summer

Well, maybe not dogs, and it's not quite summer, but there were definitely burgers! We have had amazing weather all weekend, and the heat wave continued today. It was 93 degrees in the city! Nothing gets us more excited than warm weather on our deck, since it is usually so rare, (like a good burger) so we decided to have the inaugural meal on the grill. If this keeps up, tomorrow we may be doing up some chicken!

It was a beautiful day Saturday, so we took a little drive south to Santa Cruz. First, a stop in Pescadero at Duarte's Tavern for a piece of Olallieberry pie.

It was far too nice out to sit inside at the bar (even for us), so we headed to the beach with pie in hand.

Magic Hour in Mill Valley

The weather has been fantastic lately and we just love Spring!! We managed to pull out another win in our bocce league and can almost taste the Nielsen trophy for bocce ball champions! Not to mention, to be the champion of the Spring league has become highly coveted, as the winners can display their win proudly in the Sausalito 4th o' July parade!

After our win against the Pirates of Sausalito (which makes our record 3-1, and we are currently tied for 1st place!) we took a drive to Mill Valley to celebrate our friends Rob and Devon's new house. A fantastic place with beautiful views of Mt. Tam!

Trackday at Infineon Raceway

Is summer really here?? After unbearable winter temperatures dipping as low as 48F (9 Celsius) and an excruciating total of 18 rain days since the beginning of the year, it would appear that summer is approaching. This week we saw sunny skies and temperatures around 78F (25C) and I got the opportunity to wash my car in shorts and t-shirt for the first time this year.

Summer also means a greater frequency to the trackdays that go on in the area and this time I remembered to bring my camera mount so I was able to capture the excitement. It also gave me the opportunity to try out some new go-fast parts that had recently been added, and indeed they did not disappoint giving the ol' girl supercar-like performance, although there was a Ferrari 430 Scuderia I had trouble keeping up with. And yes, I did out-brake myself after passing that 911, even Michael Schumacher has been known to make a mistake once in a while.

When you wish you would have hit the snooze button one more time? When you didn't give yourself enough time to have a proper breakfast? When you realized that you forgot to pack clean underwear after you have already left the house? When you have rushed to the airport only to discover your flight has been cancelled? Well, today has been one of those days. Literally.

After taking a deep breath, and a good look around, I took a moment to rememeber that we live in a pretty fantastic place, and to cross the Golden Gate Bridge as part of my commute really isn't too shabby, even if it was the second time I was on my way to the airport today. Meanwhile, my next flight is delayed.

This past weekend we had the opportunity to hit the slopes in Lake Tahoe. A great time was had by all, and many thanks to the Van Emsts for setting up the accommodations!

We then finished the day at The Brewery with a microbrew sampler and a plate of the sloppiest, hottest, best wings ever. Not to mention potato skins that were as big as your head. Photo op missed, as Peter was getting them into his mouth too fast. Don't worry Eeps....I didn't eat too many as I was anxiously awaiting your deelish chili!

The Washoe Wheat was one of the best I have ever had. And I don't even like wheat beer!

Not to mention the Bad Ass Ale. Awesome!

And then, of course, one last round in the hot tub.....

Thanks again Van Emsts! I think we might have to make this an annual tradition. Until next time....

Cabo San Lucas

I have been home for a week, and I still haven't quite bounced back. It would seem that I have the Mexican Swine flu or something, or as Peter likes to call it: a cold with a very annoying cough. I thought I would post a few pics of the week that apparently did me in. I didn't get any pics of the ATV adventure that we did as a "team building activity." It was actually really fun to zip around on the beach, and someone (who will remain nameless) ended up rolling his bike, dislocated his shoulder, and had a lovely tour of the local hospital. It turns out he didn't need surgery, but his ego took a severe beating. There was also some amazing whale watching (which I have never seen before), some beach time, a bad round of golf on a beautiful course, too many margaritas, and a stage performance by yours truly that included a bad impression of Olivia Newton John. (see aforementioned margaritas)

We went out on a sunset cruise and got a glimpse of the signature landmark, El Arco, a natural stone arch at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula. The arch marks the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.

Then it was time for some golf at Cabo del Sol. Beautiful course. It's a shame I hacked my way through it.

...oh what a relief it is! It was a very busy meeting filled with too many powerpoint presentations, too much talking, and too many margaritas! Cabo is a beautiful place, but I am so happy to be home! (almost as happy as Peter is that I have no voice left!) More details about the trip to follow, but for now, I will be keeping the talking to a minimum (I know, hard to imagine) and drinking plenty of fluids!

Happy birthday wishes going out to Peter Joachim who is 37 years young today! (37?!) I'm sorry I can't be there with you lovey, but we will have to celebrate when I get back. Beaver Creek Skiing Footage

So it took a while but I finally managed to piece together some of the video footage from December when we went skiing in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Most of you have already seen the "Gingey" video so this is more like a "behind the scenes", although Gingey does make an appearance in this one as well. Enjoy.

I am off to Cabo San Lucas for our annual sales meeting. It was a bumpy start, since I was on autopilot and ended up in the wrong terminal! It is always nice when the pilot is standing there with his arms crossed and says, "we've been waiting for you". The minute I stepped on the plane, the door closed behind me. Whew! Made for a stressful, and very sweaty morning! I am happy I made it, because the current temp is 80 degrees, and the breezes are gentle, yet inviting. Let's hope they don't overuse words like "synergy" and "outside the box" too much! For now, it's time for a margarita! Cheers!

Sunday Drive

So I actually made this video a while ago, but I wanted to post it to show off my in-car camera mount (and how well it works) to all my fellow film-making friends (you know who you are). The mount itself is a professional-grade suction cup that can attach on pretty much anything including metal and glass. Great for some potential action shots on a track-day or perhaps a car chase from my forth coming movie "Belvedere Deceit" (release date 2015 or around there, if I ever finish the screenplay).
As you can see the picture remains very steady despite a very bumpy and curvy road. This short little video was filmed using a small pocket-sized Casio Exilim. If you are interested you can buy this mount and many other film-making contraptions at www.filmtools.com

I had to make the trek back up to the Biggest Little City in the World to do some work, and Peter decided to tag along so we could make a stop in Lake Tahoe on the way back. The last time we went exploring was in the summer, and we have been looking forward to checking out the skiing. Having mentally prepared ourselves that this was not going to be like skiing in Colorado, especially since they haven't had any snow since Christmas, we were off to Squaw Valley, home of the VII Olympic Winter Games.

According to NASA, tonight is going to be the biggest full moon of 2009. We threatened to go for a moonlight hike, but decided we could get a pretty good view from the deck. Here are a couple pics of the moon rising up over Angel Island.

...is a weekend at the Ritz Carlton! (Forget my two front teeth!)

This year, rather than running around Christmas shopping and spending too much money on too much stuff, we decided that we would rather spend some time together in the mountains, eating, drinking, skiing, spa-ing, and well, more drinking. We were able to score a little place in Beaver Creek (thanks Scott Factor!!) for a few fun-filled days.

And so it begins.....

But first, it was time for some holiday cheer....

My sister got the wild idea to dress up as a giant gingerbread man, who we adoringly called Gingey. She actually skied in that getup all day! People went crazy for it! Asking for hugs, pictures, and ginger snaps (which unfortunately she didn't have). I have never laughed so hard! We captured some fantastic video footage that will follow shortly.

But would do it again and again, as long as the ski valet keeps showing up.

In all of the excitement of getting ready to head to Beaver Creek, I was looking through some old pictures and realized it has been awhile since we have been skiing. We are really looking forward to seeing the fam and doing a little shredding in the pow pow!! Not to mention our accommodations will be a little different than our previous road trip adventure. Although, I wouldn't have done that trip any other way! Well, maybe in a VW bus! (insert spreadsheet for planning next year's Turkey Summit 2009 here) See you on the slopes....

As most of you know, this Thanksgiving we decided to take a journey on the open road with our friends the Van Emsts. Believe it or not, we loaded up in what we adoringly called "The Beast, and headed north along the coast. This pic is just a taste of the good times that were had by all, but I think it captures the essence. Stay tuned for more details.....
